Volatility is down but not out

If today’s market action tells you anything, it’s this: Volatility is here to stay.

We saw stocks rip higher into the close — even after a shaky start — as headlines out of the Iran conflict swung sentiment back and forth throughout the day.

At one point, the Dow was down more than 400 points… then finished up over 300.

It’s the result of a market trying to price in rising oil prices and the constantly evolving situation in the Middle East.

Meanwhile, even after pulling back from recent highs, the VIX is still up more than 30% year-to-date.

That’s a market primed for fast, aggressive moves.

And last week’s inflation data only adds fuel to the fire as traders try to figure out what it all means for rates, growth, and Fed policy.

That combination (macro uncertainty and elevated volatility) is exactly where I do my best work.
